Text description provided by the architects. This public welfare project is the renewal and transformation of the adopted area of the association’s popular science education base by the Luhu A8 Design Center (A8DC) in collaboration with Animals Asia (AAF) and the Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association (WSAPA). Comprising an area of 150 square meters outdoors and 30 square meters indoors.

We took the adoption process and the movement apart, and sorted out the basic flow of “arrive-meet-choose-sign-take pictures-leave”. In this rationalization process, there is a very critical point, which is to go from the inside to the outside, and then to come back inside the outside after the adoption; this time the adopter has an extra puppy in his hands, the fate of the puppy There has been a change. This process is given by me the meaning of “rescue + coming home”. This knot is reflected directly at the time of crossing inside and outside. I think a design with a more graphic feel and an image meaning should be used to express and highlight this moment. After this revolving door, the adopted puppy found a warm home and became a “dog life winner”.

And another key node is the window sill at the door. This low window sill looks ordinary enough for people to take a rest at the entrance to a street cafe. In fact, I designed the post for successful adopters to take photos with the puppy. The appearance of this scene encourages intentional adoption clients to come later: “Look, the family in front is so happy, we have to find our love too!”

Unlike this seemingly significant design, in fact, in order to save money and have an effect on the interior, two pieces of 600X600 terrazzo bricks were directly attached to the wall to form a 1200 wall skirt of high ; at the same time, varieties with wider patterns and dark colors were selected to form a strong contrast to highlight the effect. Above the 1200 high wall skirt is
Insulating cork board. Anyone familiar with the design should know that cork board is cheap, a big roll of around a hundred dollars. But what I love the most is that it’s easy to nail all kinds of stickers and posters. Because when I visited the site for the first time, I found that the wall was covered with “Love Wall” stickers, which was too messy; with the cork board, no matter how messy it is, it will have natural beauty.

In the design of the exterior space, due to the requirement to “isolate the sight of other dogs”, coupled with the nature of the temporary building and the limitation of the cost, I used 40X40 galvanized square pipes for create a “big cage” and used solar panels to keep it stationary. The meaning of “large cage” fits perfectly with the theme “rescue + return home”.

This large cage basically fills the exterior renovation design area, like Foreign Material “https://www.archdaily.com/974977/embedded” between the two buildings before and after the base. But in aerial photography, its integrated form fits so perfectly, as if it stepped out of nature. It is located in two outdoor spaces with different height differences and contains 4 small trees. Architects always like to keep trees as the first option. Indeed, this time is limited by the fact that the cost is not high and that the trees cannot be moved. This is also the request of Master Du Fan. It is said that although these small trees are not large, they were planted by Master Du and volunteers when the base was first moved. So sometimes, what is retained is not the tree, but the emotion.

I used the side with many trees as a place for outdoor activities for the puppies to adopt and future adopters to interact with, and the other side was designed as a living kennel. The kennel area needs shade and rain, so a 2 meter column net is used to support a 5 meter high ceiling. requirement of cost and ease of construction – – This small column net unit directly enhances the thinness and lightness of the structure, and due to the small size of the aircraft, it strengthens the height of the facade, forming a unusual proportional visual relationship. That kind of modular unit and the amazing proportional relationship is what I’ve been thinking about over the last few years, how to use the most basic design language to express the concept of the sacred.

There are four kennels, each 2m × 3m, exactly six square meters. It reminds me of a “Lufang Tea Room” I designed in 2016 with just six square meters – there is no need for zen, most are based on functional considerations. For example, opening the glass allows the puppy to smell the scent of the prospective adopter, and tacit understanding of the taste is also very important. On the slanted side of the kennel, we designed a sash window using the wind hooks from the wooden windows and doors from the old house when I was a kid to open it. When the work was just finished, I joked with Professor Du: “This 2X3X2 wooden house, if you don’t organize the life of the dogs, it’s good to turn it into a guesthouse. ” This is a joke, I think the next time I do a wooden house design inspiration will start from this earthly kennel.

On the other side of the activity zone, the sky is open, leaving only one ray in the middle. It forms a contrast between sparse and dense with the kennel area. I have set up a cross-shaped light belt under this beam, and under the beam which is perpendicular to this beam, which is considered a private object worn by the designer – I want to give the tray a red cross shape. Although pointed out by a colleague, he did not understand my IDEA. Then I will treat it as the second surprise of this project. (ps: I installed the light strips that the construction team bought no longer on the interior ceiling – the one-shaped lights on the interior ceiling reinforced the axis of the revolving door.)

In the first design phase of the project, we chose to use galvanized steel pipe without paint, because the galvanization itself is anti-corrosion, choose a milky white solar panel as the enclosure. In the following presentation, many parties felt that since this project is of public interest, more people need to know about it and make it more recognizable. added at the top, it is not a question of making this small building “like a dog”, but of allowing potential adopters and volunteers who come for the first time to see the base at the last bridge over the highway. The location of this base finally gave a more vivid color to the “gray road” for the next ten kilometers. This orange also became the color of the door window sill. It has also become the color of the transparent solar panel, which covers the interior and exterior with a layer of “golden” light.
