SANTA FE, NM – Complaints over face mask mandates are creating new tensions among Democratic candidates in the campaign for mayor of Santa Fe.
In a flyer mailed out Friday, outgoing mayor Alan Webber pointed to a dissenting vote by mayoral candidate and city councilor JoAnne Vigil Coppler last year in creating a city ordinance requiring face masks.
The ordinance reinforced a statewide mask mandate of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in the early months of the pandemic, before vaccines became available.
Vigil Coppler said she found the ordinance impractical but had never opposed the state mask demands and called the ad a distortion.
