St. Paul businesses face parking issues due to ongoing construction projects

Small business owners in Saint-Paul tell FOX 9 They are fed up with the parking problems some construction projects have brought to their neighborhood, saying it could hurt business.

“They occupy spaces for our businesses,” said Patty George, owner of a beauty salon along Raymond Avenue.

Making people’s hair beautiful is one of Patty George’s specialties. But she’s ready to tear her hair out because of the parking lot in her living room.

“There isn’t even parking on the side streets, there is nothing available,” she explained.

Located off University Avenue in the South Saint Anthony Park neighborhood, construction is underway on two apartment buildings nearby.

George says this has brought hundreds of workers to the area occupying the entire street parking lot for most of the day, making it difficult for customers to access it. Other business owners say it’s not just annoying, it causes a safety issue.

“When the patients we see, the clients we see are in pain, trying to move through walking blocks here, it’s very difficult,” added Dr Mona Robbins, who runs Soul Logic in the same neighborhood.

This is a private project, so the City of Saint-Paul cannot tell workers where they can and cannot park. One of the construction companies gave George orange traffic cones, but the city forced her to remove them because they are an offense.

“COVID has shut us down for three months, we need help,” she said.

After going through a rough 2020, George says she just wants her customers and employees to be able to get to her business safely and on time.

“It changed the trajectory of the area and got gentrified and they take away the small businesses, they take away what’s going on with the community,” she concludes.
