Construction Contractor Kokosing to Acquire Third Sun Solar in Ohio

Heavy construction contractor Kokosing has agreed to acquire Ohio-based distributed generation solar installer Third Sun Solar. The company will operate as Third Sun Kokosing Solar.

This transaction will allow Kokosing to enter the residential, commercial and utility markets of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. The solar division will leverage Kokosing’s existing infrastructure in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. to better serve customers on a larger geographic footprint.

Brady Phillips, a 22-year Kokosing team member who will lead the new division, said he was delighted to partner with the experienced team at Third Sun Solar: “This acquisition moves us forward in our journey to bring high-quality solar installations to an even larger market across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic with enhanced experiences for our team and for our customers.

“We launched our solar business with a mission to accelerate the shift to clean energy,” said Geoff Greenfield, co-founder of Third Sun Solar. “As the demand for solar energy soars, it has become clear that now is the time to scale our business to meet the climate challenge. With the strength and resources of Kokosing behind us, we can expand our impact far faster than continuing on our own. Speed and size are critical as we strive to transition every aspect of our energy system to clean, sustainable technologies. We are not only focused on solar power, but also on energy storage, electric vehicle infrastructure, efficiency and electrification.”

Greenfield will remain with the organization, serving as Director of Solar Strategy. No changes to Third Sun Solar’s legacy team, offices or departments are anticipated other than the centralization of accounting and general administration services at Kokosing’s corporate headquarters.

Kokosing Chairman and Co-CEO Brett Burgett said entering this growing industry is an exciting new chapter for his family’s 71-year-old construction business: “Kokosing has a long history diversification, and after seeing solar go from the first users to the general public, it’s time to add it to the services offered by our company. We have a proven track record in building conventional power generation projects and building clean energy projects is a natural progression for us. »
