MURRAY – A Calloway County High School construction project that has spanned more than six years is expected to be usable around the same time next year, as the Calloway County School Board approved the contractor for an auxiliary gymnasium on Tuesday. and several other related items.

The board of directors held a special meeting at noon on Tuesday to approve the hiring of A&K Construction of Paducah, which presented the lowest bid out of six companies submitted. The total offer was $ 2,992,000, which included a base offer of $ 2,769,000; an offer of $ 88,000 for a new parking lot and $ 65,000 for orders for Trane HVAC equipment.

In addition to A&K’s offer, project architect Craig Thomas of the Owensboro-based RBS Design Group also recommended accepting a special inspection offer of $ 25,900 from Bacon Farmer Workman Engineering & Testing, Inc .; a $ 2,648 offer from Synergy Tab to test and balance the HVAC system; and an offer of $ 8,960 from the Performance Commissioning Agency for the commissioning of HVAC. The board approved all of these, along with the BG-1 Project Application Form.

Ryan Marchetti, the district’s director of professional development and public relations, said the auxiliary gymnasium will be built between the central office of the Board of Education and the Calloway County Middle School. Thomas said the expected completion date is August 10, 2022.

Calloway County Superintendent Tres Settle said the district discussed and planned the auxiliary gymnasium project even before he was hired to his post in 2015. He said the council had put money in. set aside for years so he doesn’t have to borrow or issue money. a link.

“I am extremely excited about this,” he said. “It actually started long before I got here. This was in our setup plan as a discretionary project, meaning the earmarked funds could not be used for this, so it had to be a general fund purchase. The superintendents before me started to put money aside for the project (because they had identified the need).

“Obviously the way that helps us is by making more practice facilities available to our students. With the addition of more and more sports at the college and high school level, there is a demand for our current gyms that exceeds our ability to supply. I’m very excited about the project, and what we’ve been able to do in the six years since I’ve been here is continue to grow our surplus on this project. Now we are at a point where we are able to make this purchase.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $ 3,310,712. In addition to the construction cost of approximately $ 2.9 million, the total includes construction contingencies ($ 146,100), architect / engineer fees ($ 177,570), site survey (6,560 $), geotechnical surveys ($ 4,300), special inspections ($ 25,900), commissioning ($ 11,608), advertising ($ 192) and printing ($ 1,482). The building is designed to be 13,560 square feet. A reimbursable architect / engineer expense of $ 15,000 is also included in the projection of total costs.

“We’re going to have a facility of about 14,000 square feet,” Thomas said. “This is a prefabricated metal building, and it should be finalized and ready for occupancy on August 10, 2022. In addition, there will be parking at our front which will be added by another offering element.”

Thomas said the new parking lot will run east to west and connect to the existing parking lot between the main road and the landing stage, so the mast and entrance will need to be moved to accommodate construction.
